Overview: Mountain Biking in the Keweenaw

Updated: March 1, 2011

It's hard to say anything that hasn't already been said about Keweenaw singletrack. In short: it kicks ass. Thanks to the tireless efforts of trail architects and builders – and thanks to the land owners who provide access – the Keweenaw has seen a new recreational resource develop over the past twenty years.

Due to the unique geologic history of the region, the trails are amazingly diverse. Bedrock, billions of years old, rides like slickrock at times; hand-panked glacial till turns into some of the smoothest singletrack anywhere; escarpments, pushed up by eons of tectonic activity, are a source of relief, though only in the topographic sense.

There's definitely something for everyone here – from shuttled downhill runs in Copper Harbor, to pump tracks in Calumet, Houghton and Baraga and dirt jumps and other man-made features on the Tech Trails. In total, more than one hundred miles of maintained trail (and counting), and endless snowmobile and atv trails, logging and dirt roads, and overgrown two-tracks are waiting to be ridden, raced, and explored.
